Big Game Takeaways
Chiefs vs Bills. Allen vs Mahomes.
This past Sunday, I had one of those unforgettable football experiences.
My son, turning nine in December, had one birthday wish: to go to a big Bills game.
He wanted cold weather, high stakes, and everything that comes with it.
While we didn’t get the freezing temps, we got a monster matchup between the Bills and the Chiefs.
We made it an epic day—tailgating with the legendary Bills Mafia, sitting in the booth with Jim Nantz and Tony Romo, and hanging with players postgame.
But while the day was memorable on many fronts, one of the things that stuck with me most was what I saw from the quarterbacks, Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes.
Let’s break down 3 takeaways!
#1: Resilience After Early Mistakes
Both quarterbacks threw interceptions early in the game.
For most guys, that would be enough to disrupt their rhythm or shake their confidence, especially in a matchup of this magnitude.
But not Allen and Mahomes.
It was clear neither quarterback let those turnovers rattle them.
They didn’t hesitate on the next drive, and they didn’t shy away from taking calculated risks. They kept attacking.
That’s something you can’t teach—it’s baked into their mental makeup.
For Josh Allen, who plays with a physicality and a controlled recklessness that few can match, it’s about trusting his ability to rebound.
And for Mahomes, it’s his unparalleled poise that allows him to wipe the slate clean between possessions.
What separates the good from the great in this league isn’t just talent—it’s the ability to shake off mistakes and execute at a high level the very next play.
Watching these two on Sunday, I was reminded that interceptions are part of the game, but how a quarterback handles them is what defines a career.

#2: Stretching Defenses to Their Limits
Now, let’s talk about what makes these two so incredibly difficult to defend: their ability to make defenses cover every inch of the field.
Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes have very different styles, but they share a rare ability to make defenses defend everything.
And I mean everything. Sideline to sideline. Deep downfield.
Even areas most QBs don’t touch—like the backside of a play where a receiver isn’t even part of the progression.
Both guys extend plays, but not in the same way.
For Allen, it’s often about using his physicality to break tackles and move the chains himself.
Mahomes, on the other hand, uses his mobility to buy time and create angles that shouldn’t exist.
Yet both force defenses to stretch thin because of one common trait: elite vision.
The Art of Seeing the Entire Field
Most quarterbacks are trained to work through a progression—read one, read two, maybe read three if the protection holds.
But Allen and Mahomes don’t just follow the script.
They process the game at a level that allows them to see opportunities others can’t.
You’ll see it in how they find the backside receiver who’s “not supposed to be open.”
That guy might be four steps away from being involved in the play design, but these two will spot him and make the throw anyway.
Why? Because their vision is unmatched, and their arm strength and accuracy let them capitalize on openings most quarterbacks wouldn’t even notice.
A Nightmare for Defenses
When you play against Allen or Mahomes, you don’t just defend the game plan—you defend the entire field.
And that’s exhausting for defenses.
Their ability to create on the fly, paired with their skill sets as runners and passers, means no defender can ever take a play off.
This was on full display Sunday, whether it was Mahomes hitting a deep strike after scrambling out of the pocket or Allen rolling left and firing a rope to a receiver no one else would’ve targeted.
For young quarterbacks, the lesson is clear: Master the fundamentals, but don’t stop there. Developing your vision and creativity can make you unstoppable, even against the best defenses.

#3: Mastering the Pressure
My third and final takeaway is the one that separates good quarterbacks from the truly great ones—the way these two handle the moment.
The NFL is built for pressure. Every snap, every audible, every fourth-quarter drive—all eyes are on you.
Add in prime-time lights, a roaring crowd, and the stakes of a massive AFC matchup?
That’s enough to make most players tighten up.
Not Allen and Mahomes.
These guys aren’t just good under pressure—they thrive in it.
Sunday’s game was proof.
Whether it was Allen shrugging off would-be tacklers to convert a critical third down or Mahomes staying poised while rolling out to make an impossible throw, they both showed why they’re the faces of their franchises.
The moment simply doesn’t get too big for them.
Ice In The Veins
It doesn’t matter if it’s home or away, a regular-season game, or the AFC Championship—both Allen and Mahomes have ice in their veins.
After watching these two square off, I can’t help but think this won’t be the last time they face each other this season.
If you’re looking for the AFC representative in the Super Bowl, it’s hard not to think it’ll come down to these two quarterbacks and who comes out on top in their next matchup.
The Real Question
This is what greatness looks like in the NFL.
Two quarterbacks, two leaders, and two guys who make everyone around them better—no matter the circumstances, no matter the stakes.
So, those are my three takeaways from the Chiefs-Bills showdown.
Allen and Mahomes are redefining what it means to be elite in this league, and as a fan of great quarterback play, I can’t wait to see what they do next.
