3 Things About Jayden Daniels

And how he's set up for success.

Written by NFL QB Consultant Jordan Palmer & The QB Summit Team

Everyone around the football world has been marveling at what we’re seeing from Jayden Daniels, the rookie quarterback for the Washington Commanders.

Some people saw it coming from a mile away—I’ll put myself in that category—but there’s also a lot of people who are shocked.

Not that they doubted he could do it, but just surprised that a rookie could play this well, this fast.

We saw Jordan Love last year, and though he wasn’t a rookie, he emerged in his first year as a starter and flipped a switch in the second half of the season.

We saw C.J. Stroud start off hot but really pick it up in the second quarter of the season, playing at a level that was right up there with the NFL’s top quarterbacks.

But now, we’re seeing Jayden Daniels do something even more impressive—leading key categories like completion percentage and touchdown-to-interception ratio in the first month of his NFL career.

So, what’s going on? What’s making Jayden Daniels play this well, this soon?

I’m going to break down three key things that are setting him up for this kind of success.

1. Decisiveness

The first thing that stands out with Jayden is his decisiveness.

Now, I’ve been around this kid since he was a sophomore in high school. I’ve spent a lot of time on the field with him over the years, and I’ve even had the chance to call his games when he was at Arizona State.

From the very beginning, Jayden has always been decisive in every part of his life—who he keeps around him, how he trains, and how he goes about his business.

It’s no surprise to me that it’s showing up on the field.

Zero Hesitations

You don’t complete over 80% of your passes without knowing exactly where you’re going with the ball, and you don’t do it without making those decisions quickly.

Jayden doesn’t hesitate.

He’s reading defenses faster than most young quarterbacks, and when he pulls the trigger, it’s the right decision more often than not.

That kind of decisiveness is the backbone of any successful quarterback, and Jayden has it in spades.

The Use Of Athleticism

We’ve seen plenty of quarterbacks in the NFL who can make defenders miss and extend plays with their legs.

What’s different about Jayden is how he uses his athleticism.

He doesn’t dance around, trying to make every defender miss. His decisiveness helps make him more efficient.

When he decides to run, he plants one foot in the ground, changes direction, and gets vertical.

That’s the key: getting vertical. Jayden isn’t trying to juke every defender on the field.

He’s getting to full speed before they do and that’s a nightmare for any defense. He did this at LSU, and now we’re seeing it at the next level.

His ability to make quick decisions, coupled with that burst of speed, allows him to extend plays and rip off big runs when he needs to.

2. Poise

When we talk about poise in quarterbacks, it’s a term that kinda just gets thrown around without much depth.

But for me, poise is simple: can I put you in a situation you’ve never been in before, and when I watch you navigate it, does it look like you’ve done it a million times?

That’s real poise. And when I watch Jayden Daniels, that’s exactly what I see.

It’s Kinda Like He Skipped The Adjustment Period

Everything about Jayden’s current situation is brand new. New team, new system, new schedule—this is his first year without school.

He’s facing NFL defenses for the first time, dealing with complex coverages and adjustments that don’t exist at the college level.

He’s taking on a level of media scrutiny he’s never had to manage before. Yet, when you watch him, it feels like he’s been in the league for five years.

That level of comfort in unfamiliar circumstances is rare, especially for rookies.

We’ve seen countless first-year quarterbacks struggle, not just with the speed of the game but with the enormity of the moment.

The NFL is a pressure-cooker, and a lot of guys—understandably—take time to adjust. But with Jayden, it’s like he skipped that entire adjustment period.

It’s like he’s been doing this forever.

Every Snap Is Magnified

When Jayden stepped into that fourth-down situation in Cincinnati, facing a cover-zero blitz, that moment told me everything I needed to know about him.

This is the NFL, and every single snap is magnified. You’ve got these gotta-have-it situations where everything is on the line, and Jayden steps in like it’s a walk in the park.

He delivered the throw of the year in that game, threading the needle under pressure like it was second nature. That’s poise.

It’s not just about how calm he looks on the outside, though that’s certainly part of it. It’s also about what’s going on internally.

The NFL is an environment where everything can change in a split second. Defenses shift pre-snap, plays break down, and suddenly you’ve got 300-pound linemen in your face.

Most quarterbacks panic in those situations. Jayden? He’s calm. His body language, his movements—they all suggest that nothing rattles him.

He’s making decisions with clarity and precision, even when everything around him is pure chaos.

That’s what makes Jayden different. And it’s a big reason why he’s finding success so early in his career.

We talk a lot about physical tools, arm strength, accuracy, and athleticism—all of which Jayden has. But poise? That’s what’s setting him apart.

3. Vision

The third reason Jayden Daniels is finding early success in the NFL is his vision.

And I don’t just mean his ability to see the field and read defenses.

I’m talking about his vision for his own career and life.

Always Part Of The Plan

I’ve been around Jayden long enough to know that this was always part of the plan.

Playing at this level, being drafted as high as he was, and even winning a Heisman—none of that surprised him.

It might’ve caught others off guard, but Jayden’s always expected to excel at every stage.

This is a guy who’s had a clear vision of where he’s headed, long before the rest of the world noticed.

I remember hearing about Jayden back in high school.

He wasn’t just known for his athletic abilities; he was runner-up for valedictorian and excelled in multiple sports.

He pursued excellence in every area of his life, not just on the football field.

So, when you see him now, thriving in the NFL, it’s no accident. This is someone who’s always aimed for the top and put in the work to get there.

Consider This

Jayden might actually find parts of the NFL game easier than what he faced in the SEC.

It’s rare to say that, but his early stats are better than his Heisman season at LSU. Why?

The combination of this system, his coordinator, and the talent around him may be making it easier for him to thrive at this level.

That’s what happens when you have a quarterback with vision.

Jayden’s not surprised by his success—he’s been planning for it all along. And that’s a big part of why he’s so ready to handle the challenges that come his way.

I’ve seen Jayden grow over the years, and what we’re seeing now is just the beginning.

He’s got all the tools to not only survive as an NFL quarterback but to thrive and potentially become one of the top quarterbacks in the league.

Keep your eyes on him, because this is going to be fun to watch.
